The shuttle picked us up at 5am. The roaring debate which pitted those who prefer to sleep in (me) versus those who can't make their own breakfast (everyone else) had been settled. We stopped at a McDonalds.
Perhaps Unknown Local felt bad for being tardy. So, he called in his shuttle driver (Senora Unknown Local) to bring us beers. We drank as many as we could and stuffed the rest in our bags.
Which we then enjoyed at the top of the Bench trail.
All but Newb had a great big laugh when he bombed past a turn and headed straight for Minden. It took five hearty lungs reaching full volume to call him back.
Some East side...
Some West side...
The trails were dotted with Spotters. When we raced past two Tahoe flat brim dudes, one asked, "Are you guys sponsored by Pabst." His buddy replied, "They must be."
After busting a long sandy climb,
a sweet flowy descent,
and one last fart and rub, we made it back to camp.
The next day, our ranks were severely diminished, but our spirits were not. Since LOtB was running late, we had an extended breakfast.
We continued to breakfast, looked at the map, and considered renting cruisers and idling around the lakefront.
Finally, admitting that Lars had stood us up, LRP Day II commenced.
And headed for Little Round Top Ridge.
Day II seemed easy on paper, but it was harder in nearly every way than Day I.
The trails were scratchier, the climbs steeper, the soil looser, the descents more technical, and we got lost a few times.
At the top of the Wildcat trail, Newb and I had to sit for a spell. The breakfast beers weren't helping. (I blame Lars.)
We finished about 3.5 hours late. Fortunately, we made it to the Strawberry Lodge before the kitchen closed.
Envy.

ReplyDeleteWhile that quote properly captures the essence of the [my] feelings at the conclusion of the 2013 Tahoe LRP, I am not sure I recall saying "nor do I think I could." What I do remember saying is that I was "totally satiated, satisfied with my accomplishment of the day, and that I don't need to ride tomorrow... I'm good..."
ReplyDeleteIt is notable that we began the ride whooping and hollering "All Mountain!" while jumping off rocks and bumps between Rose and Kingsbury. We never stopped whooping, even after 8+ hours of riding. Even though it was difficult, especially to go "All Mountain" after 8 hours, it was still a blast, right down to the final and very well planned (nod to B) decent.
ALL MOUNTAIN!
ReplyDeleteYes the Gen 2 Cronin Ride went down on Sunday. It won't be long before the little buggers are ready for a real FT3 ride.
ReplyDeleteI am looking out tonight, dinner with friends from out of town, if anything changes I will post an update.
Can we ALL MOUNTAIN! in Pollywood? Its got to be at least 3/4 mountain.
ReplyDeleteAll Mountain, All In!

Big ups to LRP. A well planned and executed event. So glad I didn't stay at Starr lake and have beers with Mike, or roll in shame to the highway and thumb a ride back. I wound't have missed the last few miles for anything.
I'll be at the Squito lot at 5:45...
I'll be in too.
ReplyDeleteThe August calendar needs a LRP...
ReplyDeleteAwesome write up. Sweet success on a trip like that is not easy. Well done to you all
ReplyDeleteI am out for tonite
I blame unspoken spouse who shared, "they had a great ride and are all heading home"...to which I texted a few and hearing nothing back did what most respectable men of our age do...slept in!
ReplyDeleteFor the record I tried to respond to that text but it failed. In my satiated and satisfied state I didn't notice until late the next morning. I earned my 8:00am "sleep in."
DeleteWow. A spouse is responsible for beer for breakfast once again.
ReplyDeleteWe should get a wager going on who's spouse that was. Here is a hint. Mine was out of cell coverage and I was not on the ride. Who went home that night?
Wow, Peter has broke ranks and infiltrated our better halves!!
ReplyDeleteI got a last minute invite to help Peter pick out some new place mats. OUT
