Tuesday's ride is just around the corner

June 15, 2013 – Sierra Century

With Captain out and Nocar attending Peter’s cookie baking seminar, Green Fro and I met up at the Squito lot for a carpool to Plymouth.  We arrived just in time to register and meet up with RG and NoHandle.  A 6:45AM departure was in order.  Since RG was taking the pulls in the front, we managed to get to the first rest stop at the 20 mile marker with an average of 22.5 mph!!  Strava records were definitely broken here!  A quick re-fuel and regroup and we were all off again.  The pace continued to move briskly while the fast people took turns up front.  Another rest stop at around 46 mile marker helped us refuel again.  Lunch was at the 60 mile marker and the group enjoyed turkey sandwiches.  The pace after lunch was much easier!   At around 70 miles, RG had to turn back to the car due to prior afternoon obligations.  Slug Gulch climb hit us a little after that.  I stayed in the back of the pack with No Handle as Green Fro and No Handle’s friend from Berkeley took off up the climb.  A rest stop at the school helped us regroup.  Popsicles were in order at that stop and we received a Slug Gulch pin for completion.  The descent back down Omo Rach was quick!  After turning on Mt. Aukum road, there were only 4 of us remaining (No Handle, NoHandle’s friend, Green Fro, myself).  Since we had about 10 miles to go at this point, I took turns at the front pulling.  Eventually our pack of 4 blew apart and I found myself riding with No Handle’s friend off the front to the finish.  With highs of less than 90 degrees F and calm winds, the day was fantastic for cycling!

As for Tuesday night’s FT3, I’m out.  Are you in?

  1. Safety - Good job on the report and pics. However, you were too kind and I have to add some details for accuracy.

We hauled the mail the first 20 miles on the roller to Ione since we met up with my old Intel crew and we had about 15 riders in our train. We spread the work load, but there were a couple of rabbits for sure. The second section up Ione/Sutter creek has some steeper pitches and everyone had to work. Then came Sutter Creek road, a great gentle climb following the creek, we had a couple attacks and a brisk pace. Once in Volcano and heading up Rams Horn things blew apart, Bob and Rick2 (Loveridge) we're setting the pace. I worked way to hard trying to keep up with my big gut hanging out, that Go-Pro adds 10 lbs for sure ;-0. Our descent to Fiddletown was spirited Bob, Patrick and two other instigators kept up the attacks. I was able to take the Fiddletown sprint sign that everyone denied seeing; it would be my last hurrah. The legs locked at lunch as depicted in Safety's photo. We pushed on toward Slug gulch, I was able to work through an initial leg lock but was gassed and took the early exit back to Plymouth for 80 an mile day. Hat's off to all the Slug Gulch survivors. It was a great day for a ride.

    1. Wait, who was attacking on the descent into Fiddletown?

    2. Bob, Green Fro, NoHandle, Green Jersey guy and Blue Jersey guy with huge left calf all attacked at one point. NoHandle made a great late attack, but it was too early. I bridged a couple attacks and waited for key moment. :-)

    3. oops, I see I was remiss on using Taco Handles and had some grammar errors, we can attribute to multi-tasking.

  2. An LRP training camp ride was held on Sunday. Meeting up at the irresponsible if not completely reckless time of 10:20, B and I shuttled the upper XP, climbed the Strawberry Jeep trail then sought our way along the scratchy Wildcat Trail along the ridge to Lover's Leap and then down the motorcycle trail back to Strawberry. 30 miles, over 8 hours, with a bonus climb up a granite cliff wearing cycling shoes and hauling the bike.

  3. I guess NoHandle peaked for the season at Sierra Century. Does LoTB still ride Mountain Bikes? Bambi has legit excuse; congrats BTW.

I may have to skip tacos, so don't count on me for shuttle.

Do we have official dates for Tahoe Ridge LRP?

NoCar - you are not as flush on cash as you thought, I still have not cashed the kits check. Kits are in production, hopefully in time for said LRP.

    2. Then you'll just have to answer to my FT3 leg breaking crew that work for delivered kits.

  5. Thank RG for the adding more to the ride report from the Sierra Century. I was just trying my best to hold onto wheels so I really wasn't paying attention to where I was going. Meeting up with the other riders was definitely great for the peloton experience. It was nice to meet a Rick 2.0 Perhaps if he were to qualify, he'd be handled RG ver. 2.0

    1. Rick2 has qualified and then got left behind in dark without a light. On the road he's worthy of taking over the helm, not ready to anoint an RG 2.0, yet.

    2. Haha, Thanks for the clarification RG. Personally I don't think there can be a RG version 2.0.

  6. RG, is right about the Fiddletown sprint; noone saw it. We were all attacking for pure fun.
And, YES, at mile 97 safety road me off his wheel - but not before GFro.

NoCar and Cappy, I was thinking about you both during the ride. It was one of the most fun group rides I've done in a long time. The Intel boys were really fun to ride with and fit in quite well with our group. Smoke'n fast day in the saddle for sure.

    1. You mean you don't remember the image of me with my arms in the air from last year??

Don't tell me you were not counting on that sign being there with that blistering attack. ;-0
