Cowbells at the Top

This blog would be remiss if it didn't recognize the awesome showing of FT3 rider Councilman who bright at least three generations of family members to the summit of the Mosquito Climb at Union Mine Road to greet Mother Lode Century Cyclists with iPhone Cowbells and cheers. Proper young man, proper. It is also amazing that you have taught your oldest son to speak Italian. Next thing you know he will be renaming the cat. It is notable that the gesture is receiving accolades via the Mother Lode Century Facebook page. This gesture may have been the only supportive gesture from locals out there, as, not surprisingly, there have been reports of other locals being a tad less welcoming. Alas, FT3 makes its mark!! The Century went well - Green Fro and I were the only FT3ers who participated. Rock God, a.k.a. Motomaniac opted for a moto ride and Safety, who expressed interest, went deep at a bachelor party. A friend and legend from the other side of the river over in Auburn, B Rouse, joined us to set a scorching pace up all climbs. One of Green Fro's road crew out of Folsom joined us as well for a while, but opted to call it a day early because he had raced on Saturday. He also managed to melt and destroy his super sweet carbon easton rear rim while decending Prospector on the way back to Coloma. In typical Velo Loco fashion no sign went uncontested. True some of them were more enthusiastic than others, but the competition was legit nonetheless. Green Fro and I took a sweet dirt route back into Coloma, something we can tack onto the Pville-Cronin-Salmon Falls - El Dorado Trail epic if it ever happens. AND... I happened to notice that our own Bambi took 8th out of 65 in the 2012 Silver State 50 mile run.

  1. After receiving almost four hours of oral displeasure from my periodontist on friday, I'm still in the take-it-easy recovery stage. Over exertion threatens to burst my stitching. And I couldn't possibly eat a taco. And spicy food is forbidden. So, I'm out.

I can't help but notice that everyone is getting big miles, while I have been lounging on the couch and ingesting untold gallons of milk fats (haven't yet developed the savory smoothie). That will be changing soon. My dance card is open for every weekend in June, and I aim to fill it with long rides, maybe a trip to Shasta. Takers?

    1. nocar, you sound like you are in hell (no ride, no tacos, no hot-sauce). Jesus, man, how do you do it? I have a Pliny with your name on it. Call it a get well soon gift. Have an It's It for me!!

  3. As indicated by B, I will be missing the ride due to coaching duties, with XTeric out it is less likely that I will be up there at all this evening...

  6. Got a break from the juggle fest, this work related MasterData discussion sounds a lot like a similar term, oh my.

I think I still have a jersey, cap, and gloves like mr. breaking away; but they are looking a bit dated like his co-star love interest and local B&B proprietor - the sands of time weathering and withering.

I chatted up a couple reps of the 'peopleforbikes.org' crew on my trip last week; we we're camped out in the same spot. They are doing a west coast loop signing up folks for the cause. VW provided a nice rig. I noted that they looked like a younger version of B and DropTail.

Does anyone have an extra tube?

  7. What size tube are you looking for RG? I have plenty of 700 x 23c tubes but I'm guessing you may be looking for a 26x2.0?

    Four!

  8. Thanks for the shout out Cappy! It was a splendid affair, short of the nasty disposition of a certain local grandmother driving up from the river. I deftly avoided her angst and veiled threats to the "safety of the riders", and reminded her that it was only as dangerous as the harried drivers on Mosquito road made it. We parted ways with a wave (or a finger, I couldn't tell) and I wished her a safe trip into town as I noted her license plate for posterity.

As for tonight, and the rest of the month, I am still on IR. I am cleared to start training again on June 1st, and I can promise you I will be rolling EARLY that morning ;) Anticipate a Tuesday road roll up for tacos in the next few weeks, and some dirt by mid June.

I will be coming down to the 'Squito lot tonight for a send-off(ering). See some of you at 5:45!

    1. Are those wheels carbon that you just melted?

Nice work on the callout Cappy. You B and Cman did a fantastic combined weekend update.

  10. I'm sure you are all wondering how the awesome ride played out yesterday. Councilman provided a proper send off and a sauce offering at the Mosquito lot as B, Rock God and I readied for departure. After watching Bambi pull into the knott lot, we saw a CHP follow him into the parking lot. The CHP officer saw us and waved for yet another proper send off, before departing down the driveway. The 4 of us departed and our ride route went something like this: climb qualifier, drop to Rock Garden, clockwise lake loop to climb the rarely ridden right lip to MET, MET to a dirt connector to descend the left lip (now the 2nd ramp over the tall fallen tree has two missing planks on the uphill side and is un-rideable for safety reasons), continue CW lake loop to MET, connector to 8, drop Palin to the bottom, climb to finish by riding the remaining CW lake loop. At Taco session, the 4 of us were presented with chips and chicken bake!

  11. Safety - From the souds of it I think you have your lips reversed. The lips are left and right from the bottom. I have been corrected on that before myself, I just wanted to pass on the gesture. You can thank NoHandle. Good report and you bastards had both Arizona sauce and Chicken Bake?? Damn.

  12. I definitely, but respectfully disagree B. They have always been 'hers' but we have always paid them a visit from down below. You may need to revisit your group consensus, as I for one am not among that supposed consensus. I sure hope our friend NoHandle is reading this.

    1. I'm with B on this one. I have actively questioned lip designations and was under the impression that the consensus was we normally drop the left lip and it is called the left lip whether you go up or down on her.

  13. So, why doesn't Safety have admin rights? That RR should be posted.

  14. Cappy. You do have it wrong. They are her lips and it is with HER great graces that we are permitted aceess.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well the way you are all agreeing it to be is the way I originally thought it should be... so it sounds like we are all correct.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I am however, rather surprised that NoHandle is showing up in this manner because I could sware it was he who 'corrected' me on this one previously. The fact that NoCar has 'actively questioned lip designations' does give the indication that there may be some confusion among the ranks.

    1. I think the theory is agreed upon. Its more a matter of FT3ers, as a group, having a difficult time with concepts like clockwise vs counter-clockwise loops, right vs left lips, and acceptable vs unacceptable commentary.
